SUMMARY:ICAS Digital Pioneering Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Purpose\nWe all will publish papers about digital content. During the workshop we want to find out how to exploit synergies by collaborating with digital models & data. And we want to have a more interactive and detailed exchange about our research. \nIntended Results\nWe intend to work out concrete topics and actions to unlock potential synergies. The results from this workshop will define the activities of the ICAS Digital Pioneering Initiative. Thus\, ICAS DPI will actively engage to support the research community. \nWorking mode\nWe have an auditorium (aud) and six smaller rooms for break-out sessions (bos). We will start all together in the auditorium and will then team-up in smaller groups to interactively discuss specific topics in break-out sessions. We will alternate between the auditorium and break-out sessions. Swapping of sessions will be possible. Teaming-up for the individual sessions will be done during the first session of the workshop. \nParticipants\nWe are expecting 50 participants. If you have not made your final confirmation or if your status has changed please let us know to allow planning of the catering etc. We will circulate the list of participants\, their e-mail addresses and the titles of their ICAS 2022 papers among the participants. Please let us know by Aug. 19th if you disagree to disseminating your information among the other participants. \nThematic break-out sessions\nBased on your ICAS abstracts we identified 6 major fields of interest: \n\nGreening of aviation\nSupersonic transport aircraft\nUrban Air Mobility\nCollaborative & digital design methods: VR\, AR\, HMI\nCollaborative & digital design methods: MDO\, MBSE\, KBE\, AI\, digital certification\n\nSystem of System Engineering \nTogether with the list of participants we will circulate an indicative matching to these topics. However\, it will be your choice during the teaming which session to join. In case our indication was not suitable or you have suggestions concerning the topics\, please let us know and we can discuss in the initial session. Each session will have a moderator who has the task to document the results and to present the results in the session in the large auditorium. \nAfter our recent DPI workshop there were requests for dedicated hands-on session for the open source software Remote Component Environment (RCE). RCE (rcenvironment.de) can create workflows using different software (optionally) in a distributed computing environment hence has a very direct relation for this initiative. SUMMARY:Workshop on Collaborative Aircraft Design using the CPACS Standard
DESCRIPTION: \nAttention: Please observe the new workshop/course date 13-14th June 2022!\nUpdate: Registration is open now! (link)\n  \nSARC is proud to offer this Workshop in Collaboration with DLR (ZAL\, Hamburg)\n \nBackground\nTargets such as climate neutral aviation require a more holistic perspective on aircraft design as well as the integration of revolutionary technologies. Thus\, it is necessary to extend the state-of-the-art aircraft design tools by additional and sometimes higher fidelity simulations. To master the soaring challenge of interfacing heterogeneous simulation codes\, the data model CPACS (Common Parametric Aircraft Configuration Scheme) has been developed. \nCPACS is an open-source XML scheme which enables to describe aircraft in a standardized way. Hence\, it serves as a common language between all disciplinary analysis tools. The objective of CPACS is simplicity and ease of use while enabling a versatile description of any air vehicle and at the same time permitting to link all disciplines up to an elaborated level of fidelity for pre-design and multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO). \nThe development of CPACS started in 2003 at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in collaboration with Airbus. The first operative version was published under open source license in 2012. Today\, CPACS and dedicated technologies are work horse at DLR and some EU projects such as AGILE4.0 or the CS2 Technology Evaluator. The approach has proven to be very beneficial in particular for collaborative research and development when partners join forces by sharing tools and capabilities. \nThe Workshop\nThe goal of this workshop is to introduce participants to CPACS-based design technologies\, such as the data model itself and the fully open-source software components\, as well as to gain hands-on experience. The last section of the workshop will be dedicated to link own software to the CPACS data model. The workshop will cover the following software components: \n\nCPACS: XML scheme for describing aircraft.\nTIXI / TIGL: Software libraries for handling CPACS files and for geometry operations based on the open-source CAD kernel Open Cascade (incl. IGES/STEP export).\nRCE: Remote Component Environment to integrate multiple software tools in one (decentralized) environment and to compose MDO workflows.\nopenAD: Conceptual aircraft design tool for instancing new aircraft models in CPACS format and to converge results on overall aircraft design level in variable fidelity MDO.\n\nVenue\nThe workshop will be held at Linköping University. \nDates\nWorkshop will be held on 13th and 14th of June 2022 (whole day event). \nOn Wednesday 2022-05-18 at 10:30-12:00\, there will be an Online Preparation meeting focusing on the installation of the software needed for the course and discussion on the course expectation of the participants. SUMMARY:2nd SARC-BARINet Aerospace Competition
DESCRIPTION:Final result\nAfter evaluation of the contributions submitted in the first phase\, the following three teams were invited to submit their contribution for the second stage: \n\nFederal University of Santa Catarina: Bruno de Lima\, Iago Silvestre\, Pedro Henrique Dias\, Jomi Hübner\, Leandro Becker\, Maiquel de Brito.\nUniversidade Federal de Minas Gerais: Artur Costa\, João Baião\, Leonardo Santos\, Sofia Paiva.\nUniversity of São Paulo/SEMEAR: Lucas Cavalcanti\, Guilherme Castro\, Raul Cotrim Ferreira\, Daniel Miguita\, Matheus Martins\, Guilherme Villela.\n\nOn the morning of November 29\, the finalist groups presented their projects. The Jury board have received the reports from each team previously. After the presentation\, the Jury board  (Davi Henrique Bossano Di Bianchi – EMBRAER\, Giovani Amianti – XMOBOTS\, Ingrid Leijonhufvud – SAAB\, José Fernando Basso Brancalion – EMBRAER\, Martin Leijonhufvud    SAAB\, Brig. Roberto Follador – EMAER)  inquired about the team’s projects for clarification.\nDuring the second session of the presentation\,  there were demonstrations from the teams but also from Brazilian companies working in the aerospace sector as well as research groups showing their work in the form of an exposition open to the general public. \nAfterwards\, the Jury in a closed section announced the USP-SEMEAR team (NoFire Squad Project) as the winner.\nThe swarm is able to search the terrain\, find the region of fire\, and initiate a strategy to slow down the spread of the flames. To understand the problem from the firefighters’ point of view\, the Team met professionals from the Fire Department. The firefighting strategy  was based on the way firefighters work. In this sense\, one of the drones leads the others\, helping them to position themselves to launch anti-fire substances in the regions surrounding the flames\, thus preventing the fire from spreading quickly to regions not yet reached. \nBackground and scope\nSystems of systems is an important field in modern aviation and a good example in this field is unmanned aerial vehicles used in collaboration to solve a specific task. With this competition the multi- disciplinary approach needed to develop technologies for such vehicles and their applications is encouraged and fostered. Awards for the best projects in this field will be granted with backing from industries in Sweden and Brazil. \nThe competition is about presenting the best solution to a selected problem involving multiple unmanned aircraft. This could be a few aircraft flying in formation or a swarm of smaller aircraft. \nThe competition encourages collaboration between academic disciplines as well as between academy and industry and is meant as an accelerator in the field of systems of systems research and\, specifically\, collaborative UAVs. It aims to motivate teamwork\, facilitate innovation\, expand international collaboration\, foster entrepreneurship\, and channel research into practical use. It is open to actors from Sweden and Brazil\, but not necessarily only from organizations under the SARC-BARINet umbrella. \nTheme\nThe theme of current version of competition is fire detection and fighting in forests using multiple UAVs. The requirement is that the UAVs should be dropped in the forest area by another aircraft. \nTeams\nThe competition is open to anyone\, except for employees of the Airspace Industry. Participants from startup companies are allowed and welcome. \nNumber of team members is limited to maximum 10 (Hard Limit – No exceptions). \nCompetition Format\nThe competition is design-oriented\, i.e. the vehicle should be design. Teams may adapt and integrate commercial off-the-shelf parts\, or entire aircraft\, multicopters\, etc. Design aspects includes mechanics\, aerodynamics\, flight controls\, structures\, electrical\, electronical\, software subsystems\, and “systems of systems”. The inclusion of computer simulations in these different engineering areas are welcome. \nThe competition consists of two stages. Based on the outcome of the first stage\, a selected number of groups from each country (Brazil and Sweden) will be invited to enter the second stage. \nFirst stage \nDrone design and manufacturing\nTeams are allowed to modify a commercially available drone\, although they are encouraged to design one in-house to optimize weight and payload mass \nThe teams will be scored based on the following criteria \n\nAbility to meet payload requirements of 1kg of fire-retardant liquid\nAbility to meet maximum take-off mass of 5kg including batteries\nAbility to meet the volume limitations of 0.5m3 (linear dimensions are non-restricted)\nAbility to meet the 20min endurance requirement\nAdditional points will be given when exceeding these requirements\n\nIn the case of the maximum take-off mass\, this means a mass of less than 5kg\, granted all other requirements are met\n\n\n\nMission for the simulated environment\nThe virtual environment (in ROS and GAZEBO environment) for the mission\, alongside an existing drone model for the teams to familiarize themselves with the program can be found at https://github.com/2nd-sarc-barinet-aerospace-competition/sarc_environment \nThe mission is as stated below: \n\nRelease of multiple drones (minimum 5) from the cargo door of a KC-390 (Hold length × height × width: 18.5×2.95×3.45 m (60.6×9.8×11.3 ft)) flying at a cruise velocity between 130 – 150 knots (CAS)\, and at an altitude of 800 – 1000 ft (above ground) above a forest-fire area of 10km x 10km.\nThe release velocity of the drones from the cargo hold is of 85 m/s.\nThe drones must carry 1kg minimum of fire-retardant liquid (density to be verified).\nThe first requirement is for the drones to be activated and regroup as a formation once launched from the aircraft at the centre of the forest-fire area and hold position for 5 seconds.\nThe drones then need to “interact” with the fire and deploy the fire retardant. The choice of the drones working as a storm to focus on a single area or as separate individuals is up to “mission control”. Where “mission control” is the team submitting the work.\nThe drones then need to fly towards a pre-defined location outside of the fire area where they can be collected for future use.\n\nThe teams will be scored based on the following criteria: \n\nComplexity of the storms of drones\nAccuracy of positioning over a self-defined point over the fire area (for each individual drone if working independently or of the reference drone if working as a storm)\nArea of the fire covered\nAccuracy in relocating to defined post-mission rendezvous point\n\nThe top-3 teams from each country (Sweden and Brazil) will progress to the second phase of the competition: the live demonstration. \nSecond stage \nMission for the live demonstration\nTeams are responsible for the meeting the cost of manufacturing and travel to the test site. In this workshop we will jointly shed lights on the different system levels\, from system of level\, through aircraft design\, down to subsystem and component design. The objective is to increase the awareness of other system levels\, than the one you normally work with\, and to give everyone a common holistic perspective on design\, to understand your interplay both with the levels above you\, and the level below you. It is also hoped that we can dig a little deeper into representations of architecture\, and information models for aerospace systems. \nWorkshop Format\nShort presentations of ca. 5 minutes with interactive group discussions. SUMMARY:FLOW-SARC seminar: The road to ”zero” climate emission air transport
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Anders Lundbladh (GKN\, Chalmers)\n  \nAbstract: After a year when many of us have been staying on the ground\, it is tempting to think that aviation climate impact is not an urgent issue. The presentation will show that aircraft emission is likely to become critical in a few decades. But changing from kerosene refined from crude oil to new sources of energy has the potential to mitigate the emission growth and eventually eliminate most of them. The presentation will give an overview of five ways to drastically reduce the net heating caused by air travel. Turbine engines fueled by liquid hydrogen be shown to be a feasible solution with a low resource consumption. The challenges ahead are outlined and a roadmap for technology development shown.

SUMMARY:1st SARC-BARINet Aerospace Competition
DESCRIPTION:Background and scope\n\n\n\nSystems of systems is an important field in modern aviation and a good example in this field is unmanned aerial vehicles used in collaboration to solve a specific task. With this competition the multi- disciplinary approach needed to develop technologies for such vehicles and their applications is encouraged and fostered. Awards for the best projects in this field will be granted with backing from industries in Sweden and Brazil. \nThe competition is about presenting the best solution to a selected problem involving multiple unmanned aircraft. This could be a few aircraft flying in formation or a swarm of smaller aircraft. \nThe competition encourages collaboration between academic disciplines as well as between academy and industry and is meant as an accelerator in the field of systems of systems research and\, specifically\, collaborative UAVs. It aims to motivate teamwork\, facilitate innovation\, expand international collaboration\, foster entrepreneurship\, and channel research into practical use. It is open to actors from Sweden and Brazil\, but not necessarily only from organizations under the SARC-BARINet umbrella. \nFor complete information please read the competition bulletin. \n\n\n\nCategories\nPrices will be awarded for the best project in two classes\n\nOpen class (runs in 2021):\nThe open class is aimed at teams assembled by PhD students\, researchers and startup companies. Undergraduate students may participate as well. The team is to pitch a scenario for which multiple UAVs are used in collaboration to solve a specific problem.\nStudent class (Information will be provided during November and run until June 2022):\nThe student class accepts teams with students up to master’s level. Similar to the open class\, the team is to present a scenario for how to use multiple drones in collaboration. The difference for the student class is that there is less focus on the collaborative part and more on the platform design.\n\nPresentation could be through simulation and/or a physical demonstration.\nParticipants will be invited to special lectures during the course of the competition on a regular basis. Raymer\, Ph.D.\nThe 2010 recipient of the AIAA Aircraft Design Award\, Dr Daniel Raymer is a recognized expert in the areas of Aerospace Vehicle Design and Configuration Layout\, Computer-aided Design Methodologies and Design Education. An AIAA Fellow and recipient of the AIAA Summerfield Book award\, he was named Rockwell Engineer of the Year for his pioneering work in aircraft computer-aided conceptual design. Dr. Raymer is the author of the best-selling textbook “Aircraft Design: A Conceptual Approach” and the mass-market books “Dan Raymer’s Simplified Aircraft Design for Homebuilders” and “Living in the Future: The Education and Adventures of an Advanced Aircraft Designer.” He regularly teaches his popular five-day Aircraft Conceptual Design Short Course\, a two-day Advanced Aircraft Design Short Course\, a three-day Short Course in Aircraft Design Management\, Requirements Definition\, and System Engineering\, and a course in Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) Design. \n Dr. Raymer is President of the design and consulting company\, Conceptual Research Corporation\, and conducts design studies and consulting for NASA\, the USAF Research Lab (WPAFB)\, DARPA\, Composite Engineering Inc.\, and others. He is a regular Forum Speaker at the EAA AirVenture (Oshkosh). His previous positions include Director-Advanced Design with Lockheed\, Director-Future Missions at the Aerojet Propulsion Research Institute\, and Project Manager-Engineering at Rockwell North American Aviation. He was Head of Air Vehicle Design for X-31 during the conceptual design phases\, and was intimately involved in the actual configuration definition. He also consulted with both RAND and CNA during the JAST/JSF concept development phase. \nDr Raymer received B.S. and M.S. engineering degrees in Astronautics and Aeronautics from Purdue\, an MBA from the University of Southern California\, and a Doctorate of Engineering (PhD) from the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in the field of Aircraft Multidisciplinary Design Optimization. He is a recipient of the Purdue University Outstanding Aerospace Engineer Award given to “honour those alumni who have distinguished themselves in the aerospace industry”.

DESCRIPTION:The SARC Kick-off was a two-day lunch-to-lunch event with more than 100 representatives from politics\, academia\, and industry. It has been the first presentation of the SARC centre to the public with a lot of information\, planning\, collaboration\, and networking (“mingling”) activities. The event took place at the SARC host\, Linköping University\, Campus Valla (lecture hall A2) on the first day and the nearby Flygvapenmuseum on the second day.
